Started wearing the V3, and then graduated to the V4s. Changed from V3 to V4 was noticeable, and fairly positive. Changes from V4 to V5 aren’t major, ver small, but enough to be annoying. Smaller slits to where you can’t easily do a heel lock (you can hardly push the shoelace through!). The V5’s are at least a half size smaller. For the first time, I ordered a pair and realized I needed to size up. Previous versions fit true to touch.

The color is bluer in person than I expected. I pictured the shoes to be more muted/ grayish but overall decided to keep and glad I did! I went with the wide fit. Love how many sizing options NB offers. Cute shoes. Super supportive.

I wore them in the house for a few hours and they felt fine! BUT my feet looked extra chunky in them. When you have size 13 feet and you’re a woman you try to go for styles that make your foot look as small as possible. I sure wish they had worked!

Love these NewBalance 840vs. I think they are cute and even feminine on my big old size 12 W feet. I also really appreciated the Zappos return policy! I purchased a pair of sneakers from another brand and they didn’t fit right so I sent them back with no hassles.

I bought the previous sneakers in a size nine and they were good. These are too big.

I have been disappointed with the New Balance 840v4 and version 5. Both versions had significantly smaller toe boxes than on the previous versions. The first pairs of this shoe that I bought had a great fit, particularly in the toe box and heel, lasted well and cleaned up great. The last two times I’ve purchased it the toe box has been both narrower and shorter in height. Since I buy my shoes with plenty of room in the toes for comfort and safety I was very disappointed with versions 4 and 5. I’ve had to move to a different shoe altogether for proper fit and comfort.

This was the third pair of these New Balance that I’ve had over the years; the previous two were perfect (in fact I’m wearing last year’s pair now!). Unfortunately, as others have noted, this year they seem to have changed the design somehow so the shoe no longer fits the same. It feels smaller and much less comfortable. Very disappointed. I returned them.

These are the first shoes I have had on my feet for three years, no joking. I had flexible, flat feet, now I have flexible feet with some arch, thanks to great PT. I also have a neuroma and a bunion and bunionette so I have some issues going on. I have been looking for a firm, yet flexible shoe with some arch support and a low heel to toe drop but not a stability shoe. My feet cannot tolerate hard orthotics or hard soles shoes (like Hokas). I tried these on a whim, thank you God, and I can actually wear them without ripping them off my feet in
an hour. So far, they seem to provide just the right amount of support and cushion, yet firmness. I love the wider sole and the heavenly adequately sized toe box so I can spread my toes. I will have to work at getting used to a higher drop shoe again……and here is my suggestion to New Balance, are you listening? Make a shoe like this but with a HTT drop of 6mm. IMHO you would sell a million of those!!
Thank you for this shoe…….Maybe I can walk for exercise now………THANK YOU!!!

I’m always wary when New Balance releases a new version of an old favorite, but in this case, everything seems to be the same as the 840v4 which makes me happy. This is my “go to” walking shoe and I am happy that the only change seems to be the colors which are nice (I got the light gray). I believe they did change the shape of the eyelet holes which should help with keeping the laces from twisting which was always a problem for me with the 840’s. Overall, I am still very happy with this shoe and it will continue to be my favorite walking shoe.

At the collar the shoes rub against my ankle bones – they come up the ankle too high. Loved the version 4, but this version 5 has some kind of wire right around the tongue which doesn’t allow for flexibility. Also, my big toe rubs against the toe of the shoe so I’d have to order a 1/2 size larger.

This shoe has a high and wide toe box that can accommodate my custom orthotics without causing extra pain at mid foot from arthritis.

Bingo! After trying on (and returning) 4 other pairs of sneakers from other brands, I think I finally found The One. I have extra wide feet (thanks, bunions), so while I was going for fit vs. appearance, these satisfy both criteria for me. One small complaint- I don’t feel like the laces will last too long. They don’t strike me as very strong. If there is one thing I have learned, it’s that if by some miracle a shoe actually fits you, buy more than one because you KNOW that manufacturer is going to change them up one day, and they will not fit. I will never understand why they do this because it forces their current customers to go seek out another brand when they were so happy in the first place. But whatever. At least I will have a spare even though they are not cheap. At this point, I’ll pay for what fits.

I also have a pair of the New Balance 840, version 4. I actually like the version 5 a little better, especially the longer tongue. I would prefer the sole color to be something other than white with the black shoe. I have a very hard-to-fit foot because of a bunion and a heel insert required in one shoe. I am very happy to find the 840, both versions, that actually fit my difficult foot.

I’ve been wearing the NB 840’s for a few years now, and was so happy to see the latest version out. I wear them with my custom orthotics, but during my try-on period in the house, they seemed super comfortable with the original inserts. With past foot issues that will crop up if I don’t wear good, supportive and cushioned shoes, I wear these 95% of my waking day. Great shoe. I only wish they offered it in more colors.

Oh my goodness…this shoe is just what the doctor ordered. I have a broken metatarsal on my right foot but needed a new set of shoes for the left and for when I can take off my “moon” boot on the right. Hoka’s make me feel like I have two large pillows strapped to my feet when I walk, but this shoe feels just right! I have very narrow feet with bunions, so the medium width is just perfect. I was able to put in my own insoles which makes these shoes even more comfortable. I purchased my first set of these at the New Balance store, and now was able to buy this second set of shoes in an alternate color from Zappos. They are super comfortable overall with no ‘break in’ period required. Style is cuter when on. So thankful I found these so I can enjoy walking my dog.

I have to agree with other reviewers — New Balance sizing seems to have gotten smaller over the years. I used to always wear an 8.5 in NB but these shoes were extremely short. I have also recently tried other styles of NB (at a local retailer) and discovered that I now have to start with a size 9.0. My recommendation is to size up at least a half size.

Placed new 840 shoes next to older and the difference is obvious- the new shoes are much too small, so I wish to return, as neither you or any other retailer has the 12.5 size. Off to buy Brooks from a local retailer. Don’t understand the quality control at New Balance- about tired attempting to buy the brand.
Janice –
These are the weirdest shoes. They are very thick around the top part that is next to your ankles on both sides. They are so thick that it hurts my ankles to wear them. I don’t know why they need to be this thick. The last pair of New Balance shoes I bought are no longer available. They were called Fresh Foam. They did not have the big, thick part around the ankle.
Sarah –
This is my second pair of New Balance sneakers. I have a bunion on my right foot. These shoes have the rounded toe case that accommodates my bunion. Look at my old shoe which I finally gave up once the pressure wore through the material.

I have been wearing versions of the 840 shoe for 8 years, and version 5 is by far the worst iteration yet. The toe box is not as wide, the heel bed is shallower, and the top of the heel area is short and uncomfortable. I count on this model as I have peripheral neuropathy from one of my breast cancer chemotherapy treatments. I need the space for my toes and the deep heel bed to insure proper fit. The previous versions were literally purchase, put on, and wear with very little break in time necessary. I have walked in 14 3-Day, 60 mile breast cancer walks and these shoes have served me incredibly well with nary any discomfort or blistering. I do not know what I will do now that v4 is impossible to find. Please return the model to its previous wonderfulness.

The size fits the same but the heel no longer has room for an orthotic because it is built up too high. If you use the orthotic, your heel will slip right out. Even without an orthotic, my heel slips out because it is raised too high. Also, the quality is just not there anymore. I tried to put the lace in the “extra” opening closest to the ankle only to find that it had not been punched through. Additionally, the shoe has some cheap plastic like covering around the toe. My older New Balance shoes had a better toe covering. Sadly, New Balance just isn’t what it was.

I have been ordering and wearing New Balance 840s. This pair were a full 1/2 inch smaller that all of my old 840s

Orthotics don’t fit this oddly constructed shoe. They really messed it up. The previous model was much better

Horrid fit .returned

I wear New Balance regularly and this one just felt off. It didn’t really bend and it was shorter than I’m used to for my usual size. I’m sorry to say, for me, it felt like a cheap knock-off. Also, and this is specific to me, it has zero arch support and cushioning which are both important to me.
